Happy hour on our new dock!

Today I’m raising my margarita glass to my oldest sister, Becky, currently battling complications that have arisen during cancer treatment.

She’s on the mend, but it’s been a long month of hospitalizations and surgery.

There’s four of us girls in the Wesner family, but we didn’t all grow up together. I’m the youngest, by far.

My two older sisters came first, born a year apart to the day, when our parents were young. Then my middle sister, born 10 years later. Then me, another decade or so after that, when our parents were in their forties.

And yes, we do all have the same parents. Two of us look just like our mom, and two of us look more like our dad.

My three big sisters grew up in Indiana and stayed there, because it’s their home. My parents and I moved to Florida when I was in elementary school, and I’m back here now because it’s home to me.

We were all raised in very different phases of our parents’ lives, and we’re all in different phases of our own lives. My sisters all are grandmothers, while I’m still raising teenagers.

We’re all very different people, but share the same basic values – especially dedication to family and friends.

We might be a motley crew, but we’re a good mix. And it’s always a fun time when we’re together, even if there’s sometimes years between those get-togethers.

All three of them are like second mothers to me, and for that I will be forever grateful.

So here’s this week’s playlist in honor of  family, sisters, and kicking cancer’s butt. Cheers to you, Becky (and my other big sisters, too)!

“We are Family,” by Sister Sledge

“We are family
I got all my sisters with me
We are family
Get up ev’rybody and sing!”

“Daughters,” by John Mayer

I’m the one at the sail, I’m the master of my sea, oh ooh
The master of my sea, oh ooh.”

“Fight Song,” by Rachel Platten

“This is my fight song,
Take back my life song,
Prove I’m alright song.
My power’s turned on
Starting right now I’ll be strong.
I’ll play my fight song,
And I don’t really care if nobody else believes
‘Cause I’ve still got a lot of fight left in me.”

“Firework,” by Katy Perry

“‘Cause baby you’re a firework
Come on show ’em what your worth.
Make ’em go “Oh, oh, oh!”
As you shoot across the sky-y-y.”

“I Hope You Dance,” by Lee Ann Womack

“I hope you never fear those mountains in the distance.
Never settle for the path of least resistance.
Livin’ might mean takin’ chances, but they’re worth takin’.”

“Eye of the Tiger,” by Survivor

“Risin’ up, straight to the top,
Had the guts, got the glory.
Went the distance, now I’m not gonna stop
Just a man and his will to survive.”

“I’m Still Standing,” by Elton John

“Don’t you know I’m still standing better than I ever did.
Looking like a true survivor, feeling like a little kid.”

“I Am Woman (Hear Me Roar),” by Helen Reddy

“You can bend but never break me,
‘Cause it only serves to make me
More determined to achieve my final goal.
And I come back even stronger,
Not a novice any longer
‘Cause you’ve deepened the conviction in my soul.”

“Stronger,” by Kelly Clarkson

“You didn’t think that I’d come back,
I’d come back swinging.
You try to break me but you see what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.”

“Girls Just Wanna Have Fun,” by Cyndi Lauper

“Oh girls just wanna have

That’s all they really want
Some fun
When the working day is done

Oh girls, they wanna have fun.”

“Don’t Stop Believin’,” by Journey

“Don’t stop believin’,
Hold on to the feeling
Streetlights, people
Don’t stop believin’,”
